5 Ways to E- Verify Your Income Tax Return – ITR

Most people skip the process of E- Verify after filing or uploading the return. As per the Income Tax Act, if the assessee doesn’t verify the filed income tax return within a period of 120 days from the date of uploading it then the uploaded return will be deemed to be invalid or null and void.

Below are a few ways to verify the income tax return:

1. Aadhar Authentication with OTP:

  • In this step, the first process is to verify whether Aadhaar number is linked to your mobile number or not.
  • If not, you should first link your mobile number with Aadhaar -UIDAI.
  • To check the status of Aadhaar linking with mobile number Click Here.
  • Now visit the Income tax portal and go to My Account and tap on E- Verify
  • Choose the option, I would like to generate an Aadhaar OTP to E- Verify my return
  • SMS will be generated on your registered mobile number with 6 Digit OTP
  • Enter the OTP in the box given and click on submit
  • The ITR will be verified and confirmation mail will be delivered to the mail ID.

2. Generating EVC Through Bank Account:

  • This method of verification is being done using the bank account
  • To verify the ITR through this option, the bank account must be prevalidated
  • Go to Profile in your E- filing account to prevalidate account
  • To Prevalidate the account, bank account, mail id, and mobile number required
  • After providing the above details, select the option Generate EVC under the My Account tab
  • An EVC code will be generated and sent to the mobile number
  • Enter the code to complete the E verification.

3. Net Banking:

  • Only selected banks are providing this facility to e verify ITR
  • Here is the link to know the bankers which providing this facility
  • When login into your net banking, you should not be logged in to the E filing portal
  • PAN card should be linked to Bank account number
  • After login to your net banking select the tab TAX
  • Next, you will be redirected to the Income tax portal to E verify
  • Select the My Account and click on Generate EVC option through Net banking
  • 10 Digit Alphanumeric code will be generated and sent to your mail id and mobile number
  • This code will be valid for 72 hours
  • Next, select the My Account tab under the E verify option
  • Choose the option I have already EVC Code

4. Sending Signed ITR -V or Acknowledgement Receipt:

  • This is a bit lengthy and offline process
  • After the return is being filed, you need to download the ITR -V from the income tax portal
  • Sign the document in the prescribed place
  • The signed document should send it to the Income tax department via ordinary post or speed post only
  • This document should be sent to the income tax department within 120 days from the date of filing, failure to do this will be treated as an Invalid return, and chances of receiving notice from the department
  • After the ITR -V received by the department, you will receive a communication via email or message

5. E Verification Through DEMAT Account:

  • This option is available only for the Demat Account holders and its similar to Bank account ITR Validation
  • Demat account should be prevalidated to e verify the return
  • To Prevalidate Demat account, bank account, mail id, and mobile number required
  • The prevalidation is process is usually taking 1-2 Hours
  • After providing the above details, select the option Generate EVC through Demat Account under the My Account tab
  • An EVC code will be generated and sent to the mobile number
